Job Market Trends
Employer profile
As of 27 April 2025, the FireUp job board hosts 264 fire and forestry employers across ten industry types, with 1,972+ active job postings.
In the past month, federal agencies are back online, adding 300+ relevant roles to our job board. At 768 open positions, private companies still contribute the bulk of roles available on the FireUp job board, followed by nonprofits (329 jobs), state agencies (298 jobs), universities (162 jobs), and FireTech startups (76), among others.
In contrast to last month’s data, state agency jobs are down by 163 roles. The top five employers on the FireUp job board as of end April 2025 were; Davey Tree Expert Co. (272 open roles), AmeriCorps (217 open roles), Esri (149 open roles), the U.S. National Park Service (133 open roles), and The Nature Conservancy (69).
Candidates are most interested in private companies, local agencies, state agencies, and non-profits; ultimately most applications go to private companies, followed by Fire tech startups.
In total, 191 job applications were submitted through the FireUp job board in April, with the greatest number of applications going to private companies such as ACRT, Grayback Forestry, Green Diamond, Roseburg Forest Products, Davey Tree Expert Co., Trihydro Corporation, Old Growth Tree Service, Wildfire Defense Systems, and Watch Duty. The FireUp job board also enabled scores of applications to non-profits (Sierra Nevada Alliance, Forest Stewards Guild, Conservation Legacy, and American Forests), and a number of public agencies (federal, state, and local). The top eight jobs in terms of applications on the platform were to various wildfire and forestry technician roles.
In terms of job clicks, the job board data registers broader interest in research, journalism, and administrative roles.
Talent Profile
In April, FireUp welcomed 100+ new members to our Talent Network! This surge can be attributed to continued uncertainty in federal hiring and an increased interest in alternative career paths with non-federal fire and forestry employers. Additionally, our monthly virtual Career Day and Job Fair events are garnering interest from professionals across career stages in adjacent verticals in climate and sustainability looking to enter fire, forestry, and conservation work.
A majority of FireUp’s Talent Network has at least 2-5 years of prior work experience with transferable skills in project management, operations, administration, data science, marketing and communications. More than half our candidates have prior experience with the private sector, followed by experience with public agencies (especially federal agencies), educational institutions, conservation non-profits, environmental coalitions, and advocacy groups.
Our talent network’s past experience reflects a range of backgrounds, including in conservation, research, forestry, data/ GIS, firefighting, prescribed fire, sustainability, engineering, finance, and sales and business development.
